Are our plastic products "green" or can we use biodegradable additives to make them "green"?
The term "green" can mean so many different things, especially in the packaging world. We prefer to use the term sustainable or sustainable package. According to the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, a sustainable package
- is beneficial, safe & healthy throughout its lifecycle
- meets market criteria for performance and cost
- is sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy
- maximizes use of renewable or recyclable materials
- is manufactured using clean production technologies
- is made from materials healthy in all end-of-life scenarios
- is physically designed to optimize materials and energy
- and is effectively recovered and utilized in a cradle to cradle cycle.
Even though, a sustainable package does not exist yet, there are many attributes about our products that are sustainable. For example, without plastic packaging to protect and preserve products, it would be very difficult for consumers to enjoy their normal day-to-day meals. In many of our products, we use post-industrial regrind to replace virgin resin. We are also using post consumer resin in the bottle side of our business. We are continuously reducing the weight of our products, also. For those products that are not recycled, this reduces the amount of waste that enters the landfill. It also helps us to use less of our precious resources. These are just a few examples of how Berry Plastics is striving to have a sustainable package. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact us.
